Picky Penguin Gets Her Man Back

By Josh Ward

It’s a common tale: Man meets penguin, penguin meets man, they fall in love. A German zoo has witnessed a bittersweet love affair between two very unequal partners.

“Old love never dies,” the country song goes, “it just fades away.” Well, maybe so, but occasionally it comes back, too. At least that’s the case when it comes to an animal keeper in the southern German city of Münster and a penguin named Sandy.

This roller-coaster story of love started 13 years ago, when a one-year-old African penguin was transferred from a zoo in Nuremberg to the Allwetterzoo Münster. But rather than integrating herself into the penguin population, Sandy set her sights on her keeper. “At the beginning,” Peter Vollbracht, 47, told SPIEGEL ONLINE, “we found it very funny. Normally you have to wear thick gloves to handle these penguins because they have really sharp beaks and can give you a good whack with their wings. But Sandy” — as Vollbracht named her — “would just sit on my boot or arm and ask to be petted.”

Gay penguins are good parents

Gee, too bad about that equal rights defeat in Maine. Looks like penguins are more accepting than humans.

TV Marks Obama Anniversary with Documentaries, Aliens

Carol — did you see this article about the V mini-series (and other shows)?

All I can say, I’m glad I don’t watch TeeVee. This sounds like a big fat waste of time, right up there with cable “news.”

Well, at the risk of having Ty disagree with me, (oh, no!), that Repug loss in the NY23 race is meaningful.

The Democrat’s win in the 23rd district is evidence that the deeply held wingnut views of the uberconservative Repugs is not a winning strategy.

The GOP wins in Virginia and New Jersey are good for the Republicans in the long run, because they won by basing their campaigns on bread-and-butter issues, like the economy, jobs, unemployment, etc. They steered clear of the tiresome social battles, like abortion, gay bashing, etc.

The Dems better get their ducks in a row for 2010.

Their ducks went back to the pond after they saw they were quacking up the wrong creek.

“Before we celebrate the new health care legislation, keep in mind that the American people will be required by law to buy private insurance and that they will pay a penalty if they don’t.

“That insurance companies will be subsidized by the government.

“That insurance companies have had double digit increases in premiums in the past four years.

“That we are locking in a for profit structure.

“This is the result of a health care debate of which the flawed premise is that health care reform can not happen without the cooperation of the insurance companies, which make money by not providing health care.

“The truth is that reform can not happen with them. The insurance companies are the problem not the solution. This legislation, no matter how well intended, will likely not be able to deliver, cost too much and be another bail out for big business at the expense of the American people.”

Disgusting.

:-(

Carol’s all wet. Michigan looks like it’s under water.

The 23rd is something, indeed.

6. David B. Benson - November 4, 2009

Carey — 23rd? :?

7. tytandanmar - November 4, 2009

Dr. B

I believe her and Micki are referring to my comments regarding the 23rd District of New York house of representative race result.

Something interesting I did learn last night while surfing the channels after the football game. There have been two recent elections for the governorships in Virginia and New Jersey the year after a presidential election that could fortell the next year’s midterm results. When Bill Clinton was elected in 1992, both the VA & NJ governor’s race in 1993 went Republican. Look what happened to the Congress in 1994. GOP first time majority in 40 years. 2004, GWB was re-elected. In 2005, both the VA & NJ governor’s races resulted in democrats being elected. Look what happened in 2006. The Dems take back the house and the senate. 2008, Obama is elected. 2009, both VA & NJ governorships go to the Repubs. 2010? Thought that was pretty interesting.

8. Carey - November 4, 2009

The 23rd precinct In New York, what Micki was referring to.

9. Carey - November 4, 2009

This was election day last year.

“All I can say, I’m glad I don’t watch TeeVee. This sounds like a big fat waste of time, right up there with cable “news.”

I can’t believe you said that. You know in life it’s to each his own. I didn’t find V one bit of a waste of time. I enjoyed it.

tytandanmar - November 4, 2009

Good for you. Sounds like someone from the Chicago Tribune was reading more into it than what was there.

denmick - November 4, 2009

V is waaay cool!

11. micki - November 4, 2009

Hey, Carol — I was just giving my personal opinion. If you don’t think it’s a waste of time, that’s fine.

But, I know it would be a waste of time — for me.

Practice what you preach — to each her own.

denmick - November 4, 2009

I’m sorry, you have exceeded the cliche’ limit for this comment.

12. micki - November 4, 2009

I happen to think 99.9% of TeeVee is just plain crap.

denmick - November 4, 2009

Watch the Big Joe Polka Show and say that.(RFDTV)

13. º¿carol - November 4, 2009

Carey, we’re not all wet. It’s not rained in several days.

Ty, I never liked Twilight Zone because they mostly had bad endings. I like a good ending. I liked Outer Limits though.

14. David B. Benson - November 4, 2009

Micki — Probably bad for one as well.

Better to take a walk.

Even do situps.

15. micki - November 4, 2009

…or sudoku.

16. micki - November 4, 2009

…for mental calisthentics.

17. micki - November 4, 2009

I’m going to make a prediction.

Some “analysts” argue that Tuesday’s election results will prod Congress to act more quickly on certain matters — healthcare, climate.

I predict that “progress” on both will wither.

tytandanmar - November 4, 2009

I heard it said today that Pelosi is pushing big time for a vote on the health care bill because she can afford to lose some blue dog Dem’s and still keep control of the house. Harry Reid is cautioning that a bill might not be voted on at all this year because he can’t afford to lose any seats.Who knows.

18. micki - November 4, 2009
tytandanmar - November 4, 2009

Also heard today the question of how many votes in VA or NJ that Obama saved or created?

19. denmick - November 4, 2009

Isn’t all the micro-analysis a bit over done?

Predication on values that have no value.

More urgent concerns like where did all the intelligence go?

20. micki - November 4, 2009

Sometimes, Den it makes sense to look at “predictors” — though I agree that the on-going analysis is a little, well…anal.

tytandanmar - November 4, 2009

The sorry part of analysis is too many people take it as gospel instead of doing more research on their own. People on news talk shows, editorials etc are paid for their opinion only. More people need to, if they are serious about the subject at hand, do their own research instead of what is being preached to them by the talking heads.

21. denmick - November 4, 2009

Part of the process I suppose.

If I were King of the World and could command it all, wouldn’t have anyone to blame when it all fell apart.

tytandanmar - November 4, 2009

At least I haven’t heard any of the Obama admin blame the VA & NJ losses on Bush. But this is only day one after the election.

Tuning in to game 6 of the world series now. Never really liked baseball but it could all end tonite. No other sports worth watching on this evening.

22. º¿carol - November 4, 2009

Since I don’t watch TV news it’s always interesting to see Jon Stewart put all the news shows together every night in about five minutes. When he fans thru all the news guys hammering on the same topic he makes them all look as silly and the thing they’re caterwalling about.

By the way my one and only grandchild is going to be
*drum roll* A BOY!!!

I went to the ultrasound so I sort of saw it with my own eyes. Sort of because really, I didn’t know what the heck I was looking at. You’ve got to be a tech to see anything, I swear. The spine and ribs were plain enough, but mostly…if you can envision the elongated head of the creature in the movie “Aliens”, well…that’s exactly what I saw most of the time. The little spine looked like Alien’s head.

Sadly, the mom was upset and cried. She wanted a girl. And I think she hates her mother-in-law now, the way I’ve been teasing her about wanting a boy because I hated the girl’s name she picked out. If I would have known she was THAT serious about it being a girl I would have laid off of her. Oh, well. Hopefully, she’ll come to the same conclusion everyone does, “as long as it’s healthy.”

Congratulations Grandma!

23. º¿carol - November 4, 2009

Thanks, TY. It’s taken some time to get used to. Neither of my kids ever wanted kids. Pete is 41 and Sara is 40! What a time to finally decided to have a baby.

tytandanmar - November 4, 2009

I was 43 when my now 4 year old was born. 25 when my oldest was born. Family pics available on the personal page link of my website below:

Den, Michael had Sharon and I watch the Big Joe’s Polka Show (RFDTV). It certainly was a reality check for us California girls. Do they love to dance the polka! We had fun watching but only did it one time.
Carol, congrats! Boys are so much fun. I’ve 4 nephews and have had a blast with them. They are so in the here and now. Nothing manipulative about them. Having boys in my classroom was a challenge (which I enjoyed) as they liked to keep busy and if you provided them with lots of hands-on science and math, they were totally focused.
