Coffee in the corner and donuts on the side

Coffee in the corner and donuts on the side

As I write this, I’m sipping a flat white. It’s my third today and I have enough self-awareness to know that if I had gone this long into the day without coffee, I would be pretty grumpy. Having ingested approximately 480mg of caffeine, I’m already 20% over the US recommended daily intake for adults. In fact, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the American University, I’m suffering from “caffeine use disorder” and I need therapy.

Like many psychoactive substances, coffee will induce withdrawal symptoms if you stop consuming it. The researchers suggest that the resulting “headache, fatigue and flu-like symptoms” as well as the “anxiety, jitteriness, upset stomach and tense mood” are best dealt with using cognitive behavioural therapy. Patients on the “caffeine fading” programme that resulted from the research are given time with a trained therapist and sent home with a booklet of helpful hints.

Is jitteriness a symptom, or just a descriptor of modern life? And fatigue? I don’t know much about the working life of an American medical academic, but if they have kids and mortgages, then fatigue is also pretty much a given constant.

Lots of good articles posted in my news feed today by friends. Sick of reading. One was a Bill Moyers, anything with his name near it is very good.

South along Grand Avenue for 51 minutes to Shopko and then back along Bishop Blvd for 27 minutes to the Birch & Barley. Porter now in hand.

    Sure gets dark early.

Might I suggest a LED headlamp, available at sporting goods stores. I find them very effective as they shine wherever you look, some are quite bright, might keep you from falling down and not being able to get up.

It’s raining bucket-loads here as the front passes by us.

Thanks for the thought. Usually I try to finish stick walking before dark. Today with the errand down to Shopko ran later. The walk along the paved path, plowed by the city park people, was light enough from the street lights reflecting off the remaining snow was just bright enough to stay on the path. Besides, by now I have it almost memorized.

After dinner another 30 minutes in the dark and up the p. steps to Sloan.

Day 5: 44+51+27+30=152 minutes. Over the minimum already. But feet and shoulders know it. 😐

Doc, your dad’s second wife is still with us? She must have been pretty young when she married him. How old is she? Your dad is probably gone, no?

Oh, and I think stick walking DOES count as an errand. Because you’re walking.

Yes, about a decade or 15 years older than I am. Yes, Allan passed away about 20 years ago.

Stick walking as errand? I’ll consider it. 🙂

I loved Abbott and Costello and W.C. Fields, too. I like Charlie Chase, never see his name anywhere but I watched lots of movies with him in them when I was a kid.

Den, if you meant the reason you couldn’t eat the food you posted in the picture was because of cholesterol in the shrimp, read this part of a study where they had people eating either eggs every day, or shrimp.

“After the three weeks were up, the shrimp diet did in fact raise LDL cholesterol by about 7 percent compared to the low cholesterol diet. However, it also increased HDL (good cholesterol) by 12 percent and lowered triglycerides by 13 percent. This reveals that shrimp had a total positive effect on cholesterol because it improved both HDL and triglycerides a total of 25% with a net improvement of 18%. A 2015 study shows that low HDL levels are associated with total inflammation in relation to heart disease; therefore, a higher HDL is desirable. The egg diet came out looking a worse, bumping up LDL by 10 percent while raising HDL only about 8 percent.”

I think you can eat shrimp.
