GMO Saturday

Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) have long defended their die-hard positions against mandatory GMO labeling laws, often by feigning concern about the financial impact labeling laws would have on consumers. Labeling will be costly for manufacturers, who will pass those costs on to consumers, they consistently argue (despite studies suggesting otherwise).

As if concern for consumers’ wallets had anything to do with Big Food’s determination to deceive.

So the first question we asked the Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) last week, following the announcement that Campbell’s will label all of its products that contain GMOs, was this: Will you charge more for these products after you label them?

In an email to OCA, company spokesman Tom Hushen wrote:

“To be clear, there will be no price increase as a result of Vermont or national GMO labeling for Campbell products.”

Will Campbell’s have to absorb extra costs associated with labeling? Will profit margins on their GMO brands shrink?

No, says Carmen Bain, a sociology professor at Iowa State University who studies GMO labeling. Bain told PoliticoPro’s Jenny Hopkinson:

“Campbell has determined that the cost of labeling their products is negligible (and therefore won’t mean higher costs for consumers) and that it’s probably costlier for them not to get out in front of this thing.”

I make 3 salads at a time to be eaten 3 days in a row. Bob refuses salads now, so they’re all for me. I do 3 at a time so I don’t have to drag out all the different parts to the salad, every day. Saves me time to do 3 at a time.

Yes. My vanity in the bedroom has 3 mirrors, the two on the ends move, can see the sides and most of the back of my head. Plus I have a hand mirror to TRY to cut the back by my collar, ear to ear. That part is damn hard. When my hair is washed and blown dry, doesn’t look bad, but when I don’t wash my hair it REALLY looks awful from the bad cut, lol.

One small step towards a safe food supply. Need to also be concerned about antibiotic and rBST use.

It stopped snowing just before I set off on a 47 minute stick walk to the Terre View Drive bridge and return. The city park department had already plowed that part so it wasn’t trying to stick walk in the snow.

I was surprised to see the number of footprints in the unplowed portion of the Greenway trail.

Day 7: 118+47=165 minutes for this winter week, with today’s walk quite comfortable in my new boots.

I must submit my computer to the Microsnot Guru’s once again for updates.

I seems these computer things are not that advanced enough to avoid consuming vast amounts of CPU while downloading and installing booger patches for poorly vetted software.

Drove to town today to gas up our Celica. Drove the new one, the SUV, to town a couple days ago for errands and to gas IT up. Both times I forgot to take the damn trash! I recycle everything recyclable, burn the paper trash, compost kitchen scraps that you can compost and that leaves meat, fat, bones and jars of fat from draining hamburger to get rid of. We used to drive it to the dumpster where Bob and I worked, but since he retired that kind of dried up. Especially now that Bob doesn’t leave the house except for doctor appointments. I don’t want to go there by myself in case a cop spots. me, lol. Bob worked there so he always was with me. He even had the key to the plant in his pocket, just in case.

If I remember to take it when I gas up a vehicle, I’ll have one or two Ziploc-sized bags of scraps, and once in awhile a jelly jar of fat. Not much and I can nicely put it in the trash by the gas pump. Jill does the same thing. She also doesn’t need to pay for garbage pickup. But SHE remembers her scraps when she heads to a gas station. This is new to me so I keep forgetting. I’m going to write it on the blackboard by the back door, maybe that will help.

Our dear Governor Rick Snyder is sure getting the publicity now. Bet he’s beside himself. Everyone is calling for his head, he should resign, he should be arrested, blah, blah, blah. I’m betting nothing happens to him. A terrorist could come here, poison a city of 100,000 people and you know what would happen. He did the same thing, nothing will happen to him. Just like nothing happened to George W. They’re all above the law.

As I understand it, it was the city manager that the the governor appointed.

Yes. The governor of this state can now appoint someone to take over any city, or school system in Michigan Once the manager is in place, he can toss out elected officials, probably can cancel contracts, too. The Emergency Manager law came about a few years back so I’ve forgotten most of the details. People of Michigan got the EM law on the ballot and voted NO, we didn’t want it. We undid the law but a few weeks later the republicans in Lansing pushed that law, with a small rewrite in it, back into law. When they did that they put a small appropriation in the bill. Bills with appropriations in them can’t be undone by the people. They can’t be put on a ballot. They did that when they got rid of our price stickers. Can’t put that on a ballot to undo it. I HATE them for that one. I so miss price stickers on my grocery items.

Ever since that the repukes in Lansing have put an appropriation in just about every law they pass. They did it to the Right To Work law they passed during a lame duck period. The People of Michigan’s hands are tied tightly now.
