NOAM CHOMSKY: The U.S. isolation at Marrakech is symptomatic of broader developments that we should think about pretty carefully. They’re of considerable significance. U.S. isolation in the world is increasing in remarkable ways. Maybe the most striking is right in this hemisphere, what used to be called “our little region over here”—Henry Stimson, secretary of war under Roosevelt, “our little region over here,” where nobody bothers us. If anybody gets out of line, we punish them harshly; otherwise, they do what we say. That’s very far from true. During this century, Latin America, for the first time in 500 years, has freed itself from Western imperialism. Last century, that’s the United States. The International Monetary Fund, which is basically an agency of the U.S. Treasury, has been kicked out of the—of South America entirely. There are no U.S. military bases left. The international organizations, the—the hemispheric organizations are beginning to exclude the United States and Canada. In 2015, there was a summit coming up, and the United States might have been excluded completely from the hemisphere over the issue of Cuba. That was the crucial issue that the hemisphere—on which the hemisphere opposed U.S. policy, as does the world. That’s surely the reason why Obama made the gestures towards normalization, that were at least some step forward—and could be reversed under Trump. We don’t know.

Had to drive to the big grocery store in Mason, 15 country miles away. Had a small list but ended up spending $240. That’s because I started grabbing stocking stuffers for the kids, even though they aren’t kids. I’ll never stop doing that because it’s so much fun. Of course I WILL stop when SS dries up.

It’s helping that Bob is back to work. Nothing like extra money, that’s for sure.

Had of mess of dishes to do, fed, walked and played with Quincy. It feels good to sit.

I think we’re expecting snow tonight. Darn. The stuff we got a couple days ago melted the next day. Once it hits, there goes my walks. Won’t even walk up and down the drive. I’ll probably fall like I did last year.

This Trump crap, it’s so depressing. I was working at the kitchen sink earlier and just started crying. I’d watched Joe Biden on Stephen Colbert this morning and what an eye-opener, it’s like I forgot what a calm, intelligent Democrat looked like. Wow. That got me, no more level-headed, empathetic people for 4 years, nothing but billionaires, in charge of everything. What an effin’ mess.

Except I think it has to be. Before this country wakes up, things have to get a lot, LOT worse than they are. They’re bad enough in my opinion, but lower information, Trump voters, people who don’t pay much attention, things have to reach a crisis that affects them before they’ll notice anything.

Time to read my two newspapers, don’t want to miss yet another day.

Despite the skiff of snow on the plowed trail, just 26 minutes to Waddell & Reed via a stop at the CPA’s office. Then a stroll to the Foundry for a late lunch. Almost completely clear out; sun is nice.

And then home by much the same reverse route, up College Hill Climb and Maple Street Extension. Daily total is 55 minutes, the latter portion rather colder as the sun was going down. Earlier saw a magpie.

Day 4: 79+55=134 minutes. Supposed to snow for the rest of the week but I suppose I can squeeze in at least another 16 minutes of stick walking. 🙂

No snow forecast until tomorrow night. Then lots for several days.

Shoveling is good exercise as well.
