A diet of pine nuts, mushrooms and moss might sound like modernist cuisine, but it turns out it was standard fare for Spanish Neanderthals.

Researchers studying the teeth of the heavy-browed hominids have discovered that while Neanderthals in Belgium were chomping on woolly rhinoceros, those further south were surviving on plants and may even have used naturally occurring painkillers to ease toothache.

The findings, the researchers say, are yet another blow to the popular misconception of Neanderthals as brutish simpletons.

“Neanderthals, not surprisingly, are doing different things, exploiting different things, in different places,” said Keith Dobney, a bioarchaeologist and co-author of the research from the University of Liverpool.

Writing in the journal Nature, Dobney and an international team of colleagues describe how they analysed ancient DNA – from microbes and food debris – preserved in the dental tartar, or calculus, of three Neanderthals dating from 42,000 to 50,000 years ago. Two of the individuals were from the El Sidrón cave in Spain while one was from the Spy Cave in Belgium.

Plenty of Neanderthals still out there, they just call them Rednecks now.

Neanderthals have gotten a bad rap far too long. Disclosure: I, too, held on to many myths re their intelligence, or lack thereof. Gee, they’re looking darned smart compared to some of today’s homo sapiens!

There’s some evidence Neanderthals engaged in cultural expression — perhaps even musical instruments, some sort of flute (I don’t recall its name) fashioned from an animal’s femur. Subhuman? Or the hominid ancestor of Beethoven? Mozart? Leonard Bernstein?

Did they brush their teeth? 😉

Speaking of intelligence…Andy Borowitz breaks the news that Betsy DeVos is no longer the dumbest person in Trump’s cabinet.

Wikileaks doc. dump could be another Russian hacking product meant to further destabilize the US by undermining the CIA and reducing it’s spy powers. The release lets the sinister parties defeat any efforts to snoop by the CIA stifling investigations Worldwide, including Russia.

We are being set up like bowling pins for a bigger strike, when it happens the people in the US will be cow-towing to whatever the government suggests out of fear, quite similar to 9-11 only worse.

The vulnerability of our major coastal cities is in the waterways that abut those cities and the possibility that the threat will come from underneath the water and unseen until it is too late.

A slow 52 minutes to the TVD bridge and return in the rain. A magpie flying. Spill water crossing the trail to splash through. Missouri Flat Creek in full spate. Two pigeons? The little loud birds actually in view. The hawk in the same tree. Don’t know what all those birds find to eat.

    Day 5: 145+52=197 minutes.

It looks like Putins two goals will be realized, blow up the CIA and empty the State Dept since the newest Glasnost. Vodka might get cheaper, we will need it.

Home from the graduate piano recital. Jason did very well. Not many people there, but had a chance to chat with Keadrin and afterwards to say a few words with Gareth.

    Still raining.

Pete came over this morning. He helped me pick up sticks. We didn’t get it all done, but at least it was a start. Boy, those winds yesterday were destructive. DTE now says it was the biggest storm, ever. Over 4,000 lines down. That’s just DTE’s area.

Brian keeping Quincy home tomorrow, I’ll be dog-free until Monday. I already took his blankets off the couch. Have to go grocery shopping, and maybe I’ll pick up more sticks. That’s tomorrow’s plans along with everything else I do. Those are the extras.
