Essay Saturday

Americans have become deeply concerned about Russia. Some 75% of them see it as a very or moderately serious threat. This, according to an ORC/ CNN opinion poll. They are ranking it just after North Korea and Iran. This level of anxiety about Moscow is irrational, but likely it has to do with fears of Russian interference in the presidential election. Some 55% are somewhat or very concerned “that people associated with Donald Trump’s campaign had contact with suspected Russian operatives during last year’s campaign.”

72% of Americans view Russian president Vladimir Putin unfavorably.

As news broke that Attorney General Jeff Sessions likely had a third previously unreported meeting with the Russian ambassador during the presidential campaign, when Sessions was a Trump surrogate, opinion polling shows that a majority of Americans want Sessions to resign because, they say, he lied under oath. A plurality, of 43 percent of Americans, have a negative view of him versus 23 percent who are positive.

I can’t think of a moment in my lifetime when scandal erupted in a new administration with this ferocity. Most Americans probably never even knew who most of the attorneys general were, much less wanted them gone within a month of their swearing in.

Ah Saturday, relief from the bonds of work for some, to others every day is Saturday.

Time to tamper with the time once again, clocks ahead this time.

    Eclectic Saturday…

A new study, out Friday in the journal Science Advances, suggests that since 1960, a staggering 337 zetajoules of energy – that’s 337 followed by 21 zeros – have been added to the ocean in the form of heat. And most of it has occurred since 1980.

Favorite part of early ‘7O’s: Allman Bros Band, Marshall Tucker, pretty much all the Southern Rock Bands, The Kinks, Jethro Tull, The Dead, on and on and on.

Worst part of mid 70’s on:

Disco, without a doubt. Girls wanted me to dress in skintight Levi’s with no pockets and boogie to the groove.

It was like a civil war of modern culture at the time.

          I know no yoga

I came back one summer from NC when I was 15 where the trend was wearing guitar strap material sewn to the fringes of the bell bottoms.

To my surprise, within a week half of Westchester High School was rocking them.

Led Zep, Tull, Doobies, Steely Dan, Stevie Ray and many, many more here.

My backwoods Disco’s were good ‘chick’ shopping places otherwise I would have avoided that scene even though it had a lighted dance floor, similar to fire walking but not quite as hot.

Still cold here. Got my jobs done for the day, plenty of food in the fridge and it’s movie time. After we watch this last one I’ll jump in the car and take them back to the video store. They aren’t due until tomorrow, but if I get them back they’ll be able to rent them out tonight. Saturday’s were always the biggest rental days for our video store.

In the rain, just 24 minutes to the Old Post Office. Of course it started as I set out.

Then home in the full moonlight for a total of 49 minutes. My, what a difference going up College Hill Climb and Maple Street Extension. It used to be hard.

      Day 7: 197+49=246 minutes.

I want some rain, and no wind SO I CAN BURN THE TRASH! Good grief, it’s piling up in the garage, lol.

Our electric company, DTE, said the wind storm we had was unprecedented. It was REALLY big! It was YUGE.

Done with wind, very cold out, just want some rain so when I burn I won’t be a nervous wreck. I worry about setting the cornfield on fire, hate getting old. I never used to obsess over that, just was careful without the extreme worry.

I washed the car and van, moved the engine hoist to a better place, painted a small cabinet, sorted odds and ends, BBQ Burger and onion rings with beers, I finally feel good enough to get busy doing stuff that has been neglected for months.

Excellent news! Spring’s spring fever has helped you out. You had a good, productive day. Being productive like that, at the end of the day one can celebrate how good it felt to do it all. It’s most satisfying.

You’ll never guess who I talked to tonight. ERLING! He messaged me on Facebook to give him my phone number, which I did, and he called! We must have talked over an hour. He has an accent, which sounds more Russian to me. He talked w/ a Norwegian accent for me so I could see the difference. His English is excellent, and his knowledge of this country, and of the world is wide. He knew more of the state capitols than I did, lol.

Europeans, lifestyles are so different. They travel. He’s been everywhere. He’s been to NYC, and he lived in Canada for a bit. He says aboot instead of about. He said when he was in Canada, he found he didn’t like Americans. I’m not clear on what made him say that. He was in the Merchant Marines, then in the Norwegian Navy.

He doesn’t understand why there are so many murders, murders w/ guns. Every Norwegian has a gun, no one kills anyone.

He wondered about republicans in this country, why they never do anything nice for us. NO KIDDING! That’s what I always wonder out loud. They are mean to the people who vote them into office.

They have an electoral college type-thing over there. They can vote a guy into office, but the other guy gets it because of their EC.

They have something like 7 different political parties.

He had to go to the hospital recently, something to do with the veins in his leg. A clot, maybe, they had to cut it out? Not sure I’m getting that right. He mentioned it to me because he wanted me to know that that stay and medical help didn’t cost him a dime. He said their health care is not always free, sometimes they have to shell out $50 for something.

He watches Saturday Night Live and LOVES Alec Baldwin’s Trump, and McCarthy’s Spicer.

He wondered why our schools don’t teach our kids about other countries.

Erling said regarding Trump, that he’s scared. “I am across the Atlantic and I am scared.” We all are, Erling, we all are.

He said the top three worst world leaders are Putin, Erdogan and Trump.

    Loved talking to him!
