Sunny Sunday

POTENT CORONAL HOLE TURNS TOWARD EARTH: A large hole in the sun’s atmosphere is turning toward Earth, and it is spewing a stream of fast-moving solar wind toward our planet. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the giant fissure on April 21st:

This is a “coronal hole” (CH) — a vast region where the sun’s magnetic field opens up and allows solar wind to escape. Gaseous material flowing from this coronal hole is expected to reach our planet on April 23rd or 24th and could spark moderately-strong G2-class geomagnetic storms. NOAA forecasters say the odds of a magnetic storm is 75%.

We’ve seen this coronal hole before. On March 27th it lashed Earth’s magnetic field with a fast-moving stream that ignited intense auroras around both of Earth’s poles. The coronal hole is potent because it is spewing solar wind threaded with “negative polarity” magnetic fields. Such fields do a good job connecting to Earth’s magnetosphere and energizing geomagnetic storms.

Explains my sunburned butt. Never walk around buck nekkid during a magnetic storm

Brilliantly sunny day here today, no wind, Jill came over and the three of us sat out on the front deck for awhile. Then we went in and caught up on two episodes of “Z Nation.”

After she left I went to town, returned our movies to the video store, went to the library and picked up an audio book and a movie I requested. When I got home, got the tractor and out mowed. Got the whole place done. Didn’t get to the property next door though. Jeff (friend from work) coming over tomorrow to put the new blades on my tractor and to change the oil AND he’s bringing his chainsaw. I have several dead trees that went over in high winds the past few months.

Pete is also coming over tomorrow, I’m going to show him how to use our Weedwacker-On-Wheels along the lilac wall. I hope the thing starts because I’m so excited to have someone whack the lilacs for me!

Everything is beautiful around here now. My evening walk was such a pleasure.
