Nothing funny to report here, warmer than normal expected, Mongolian beef on the lunch menu, first a haircut and a visit to the VA, then a couple hours of intense motorcycle chatter with other like minded individuals.

Possibly this has already been noted at DWF, but I only became aware of the hospital/medical industry ramifications of this WANNACRY ransomware hit late last night. I’ll admit, I don’t even know the true definition of “ransomeware.”

I do know that U.S. hospital systems (don’t know how many) will block emails that have pdf attachments until there’s security certainty. WTF?

Can any of you enlighten me?

“…Hospitals make for popular ransomware victimsbecause they have an urgent need to restore service for their patients. They may therefore be more likely to pay criminals to reinstate systems. They also often make for relatively easy targets.

β€œIn healthcare and other sectors we tend to be very slow to address these vulnerabilities,” says Lee Kim, the director of privacy and security at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. β€œBut whoever is behind this is clearly extremely serious.”…”

The problem centers around the use of Windows XP for their operating systems.

XP is no longer supported and as such is laden with vulnerabilities.

There was a patch issued for Win 7 and up to prevent such an occurrence as they had with XP systems.

A check for updates for any OS from Win 7 on up is required if you want to try and avoid capture by this “thing”. If your updates are automatic you probably are ok, prudence would dictate checking anyway, it’s in the control panel.

Even slower going home so a daily total of 112 minutes. A cottentail, some little birds making the magpie seem big.

      Day 6: 258+112=370 minutes.
