Burning Man 2017 is wrapping up today, following the burning of the Man on Saturday night — which ended tragically this time with the death of one man who ran into the flames — and tonight’s Temple burn.
We had an early look at some of this year’s art pieces, and today we get a collection of photos from Oakland-based photographer Jonathan Goody, who just got off the playa himself.

Equifax, one of the three major consumer credit reporting agencies, said on Thursday that a data breach left Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers and other sensitive information for 143 million United States consumers vulnerable to hackers.
Criminals gained access to certain files in the company’s system from mid-May to July by exploiting a weak point in a website application, according to an investigation by Equifax. The company said that it discovered the intrusion on July 29 and has since found no evidence of unauthorized activity on its main consumer or commercial credit reporting databases.

Haze bad here, too, but Lummi and Orcas were silhouetted in the smoke by the bay, while I was riding my trusty Brompton – both islands were not to be seen yesterday, so a slight improvement.

SAN JUAN, P.R. — One of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded crescendoed over the Caribbean on Thursday, crumpling islands better known as beach paradises into half-habitable emergency zones and sideswiping Puerto Rico before churning north. It is expected to hit the Florida Keys and South Florida by Saturday night.
More than 60 percent of households in Puerto Rico were without power. On St. Martin, an official said 95 percent of the island was destroyed. The Haitian government called for all agencies, stores and banks to shut down as the storm hit. Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda said that half of Barbuda had been left homeless.

MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico late Thursday, shaking buildings as far away as Mexico City and sending worried residents into the streets.
The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 8 and struck about 60 miles, or 96 kilometers, southwest of Pijijiapan, off the coast of Chiapas State, near the border with Guatemala.
The United States Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning right after the quake hit. The quake was felt in the capital, Mexico City, and as far as 620 miles, or 1,000 kilometers, away from the epicenter, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said.
Zhaira Franco, 35, who works for Facebook in social programming, said she heard an alarm 30 seconds before the earthquake hit her building in Mexico City. The building shook so much it hit the adjacent building, she said.
An aftershock with a magnitude of 5.7 and an epicenter about 50 miles to the northwest of the first quake hit 12 minutes later, the United States Geological Survey said.

An earthquake of a magnitude 8.2 struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, late on Thursday local time, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said, citing USGS data.
Tsunami waves of more than 3 meters, or nearly 10 feet, above the tide level are possible along some coasts of Mexico, the PTWC said.
It added that tsunami waves of 0.3 to 1 meters above the tide level were possible for some coasts of the Cook Islands, Ecuador, French Polynesia, Guatemala and Kiribati.
Tsunami waves of less than 0.3 meters above tide level were possible Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Hawaii, Honduras, Jarvis Island, Nicaragua, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Palmyra Island, Panama and Peru.
The quake’s preliminary reading had been at magnitude 8.0.
