The stench of decomposing flesh pulsed from a funeral home into a Michigan neighborhood as maggots wriggled along the garage floor near cardboard-boxed corpses stacked along walls.
The dead can’t complain, but on occasion — through rot — they scream for judgment against the living entrusted with prompt and solemn cremation or burial. Of 10 bodies found in the unrefrigerated garage at Swanson Funeral Home in Flint last year, one was not embalmed and had been there about six weeks. The Michigan attorney general filed complaints against the business, but it remained open until July — after inspectors again found bodies in the unrefrigerated garage.
The Flint business is one of several funeral homes in the U.S. in recent years that have been forced to close after similarly gruesome discoveries, usually only after someone has complained to local authorities. Funeral home regulations vary across the U.S., with some states requiring annual inspections and several requiring no inspections at all. Michigan is among those that review funeral homes when they apply for a license or when a complaint is filed.

Several years ago Bob was searching for the cheapest place to cremate him, to save me money after he died. He found the Swanson Funeral home up in Flint, the price was supposed to be something like $600 or $800. I nixed that, told him to stop worrying about the damn money for that, and why Flint? So far away. He said that didn’t matter, they would come down and get him. He didn’t do it.
Then back in maybe 2015 the story broke. Seems a funeral director from the next town over from Stockbridge, Leslie, MI, went up to their place and discovered the gruesome scene. AHA! I was elated to point that story out to Bob.
It made the news again in the article you posted, Den.
Jill called a funeral home up in Mason a couple weeks ago, which she insisted we use, and I insisted we use the one in Stockbridge. They are cheaper so that is where Bob will be taken care of.
Been crying a lot this morning, both Jill and I. It looks like Bob’s time is here. The nurse this morning said it would probably be hours. We’ve been taking time hold his hands and being with him. He doesn’t seem to be suffering, not as much as we are.
Sorry to give that update to you guys. I’m just so sad right now and crying. You don’t have to try to find any words to comfort me, just talk politics and the indictments. That’s the stuff I love to read about.

Always a sad time when someone dies, the tears are more for the living, losing that person they have come to love forever. At least you have good kids to help, you are mighty lucky that way.

It’s Francisco Liriano making his World Series debut, facing Cody Bellinger who has a good chance to give his team a tad more a cushion with a runner on second.
Liriano wastes no time, getting ahead of Bellinger 0-2. Liriano throws a slider outside, Cody doesn’t chase. He fouls off a pitch and then takes another pitch. 2-2.
He fouls off another pitch too close to take. Still 2-2. And he fouls off another one. It remains 2-2. And on 2-2… it’’s just outside. Finally, on the 8th pitch of the at-bat, Bellinger goes down swinging.
Still, the Dodgers are three outs away from forcing a Game 7!
