HEAVENLY GEMINIDS: The Geminid meteor shower peaked on Dec. 14th with as many as 140 meteors per hour, according to the International Meteor Organization. The shower was rich in fireballs (meteors brighter than Venus). NASA’s network of all-sky meteor cameras captured more than 400 fireballs over the USA alone. In Japan, astrophotographer “Kagaya” set up his camera at the Oarai Isosaki-jinja Shrine in Ibaraki and caught a Geminid disintegrating brilliantly behind one of the shrine’s iconic Torii gates:
In the Shinto religion, Torii gates are considered portals to the sacred. In this case, it led to a heavenly Geminid. “I waited by the gate 4 hours to catch a meteor in just the right position for a good photo–well worth it for a fireball of this magnitude,” says Kagaya. “Note that you can see the meteor’s reflection in the water,” he points out.
I saw my share of meteors skimming the Earths atmosphere, very cool.

It snowed a bit more today but the plows did the absolute minimum. So it took all of 29 minutes to trudge down to the Old Post Office once again.

Lots of recorded Christmas music. Some of it is good.

Drudged back up College Hill Climb and Maple Street Extension. The latter had a jeep stuck halfway up. Still, an expected 61 minute round trip.

Pete’s came over as did Jill. Brian stopped by for a little while but had things to do, places to go, people to see. It was nice to have the company. Jill and I are going to watch the last episode of Walking Dead tomorrow then go to the Wooden Nickel Saloon in Dansville for a burger and a beer. I haven’t been there in ages. I get to eat out!!! Yay!

Have to round up the ingredients for Christmas Eve and Day dinner. Jill and Sara bringing stuff, of course, we three women will put the feast on as usual. Have to make a run to Merindorf’s meat market for sausage, other than I can get whatever at Meijer’s. I won’t have that much to do, have to thaw out the ham Jill got from work, make the sausage, and a couple other things along with a giant bowl of shrimp. Sara has her famous Aunt Jeanette’s potatoes to make, Jill her famous Bean Dip, Kolach and ham rolls. Sara will also make her famous Strawberry Things. Mmm. I think I may whip up Deviled Eggs, they are always a hit.
All presents bought and wrapped, so that’s behind me.
