WEEKEND CONJUNCTION: Set your alarm for dawn. This weekend, Mars and Jupiter are in conjunction, side by side, shining through the twilight glow of sunrise. Andrea Aletti photographed them on Jan. 6th from a hotel in the Swiss Alps:
“An incredible conjunction!” Aletti says. “The planets were so clear, I could see them through gaps in clouds, and I was able to take their picture using only a simple and not expensive smartphone.”
If you missed the show on Saturday morning, try again on Sunday, Jan. 7th. The two worlds will be little more than a quarter of a degree (1/4o) apart–half the width of a full Moon. They won’t be this close together again until March of 2020.
Cloudy on the day that the rest of the students return.

Return the same route for a daily total of 93 minutes. Two flocks of pigeons exercising and one hawk riding a thermal. I looked away for a moment so I missed the dive.

SHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos offered a spirited defense of her boss’s intelligence on Friday, bluntly asking reporters, “Would a moron hire me?”
“My intelligence can be very intimidating,” DeVos said. “And if Donald Trump was a moron, he would not want to be around people who are intelligenter than him.”
As evidence that Trump does not feel inferior around highly intelligent people, DeVos singled out other members of Trump’s Cabinet. “Leave me out of it for a second,” she said. “If Donald Trump was such a blithering idiot, why would he have hired Rick Perry?”
