Tech Turn Thursday

The first time I met Christopher Wylie, he didn’t yet have pink hair. That comes later. As does his mission to rewind time. To put the genie back in the bottle.

By the time I met him in person, I’d already been talking to him on a daily basis for hours at a time. On the phone, he was clever, funny, bitchy, profound, intellectually ravenous, compelling. A master storyteller. A politicker. A data science nerd.

Two months later, when he arrived in London from Canada, he was all those things in the flesh. And yet the flesh was impossibly young. He was 27 then (he’s 28 now), a fact that has always seemed glaringly at odds with what he has done. He may have played a pivotal role in the momentous political upheavals of 2016. At the very least, he played a consequential role. At 24, he came up with an idea that led to the foundation of a company called Cambridge Analytica, a data analytics firm that went on to claim a major role in the Leave campaign for Britain’s EU membership referendum, and later became a key figure in digital operations during Donald Trump’s election campaign.

Or, as Wylie describes it, he was the gay Canadian vegan who somehow ended up creating “Steve Bannon’s psychological warfare mindfuck tool”.

In 2014, Steve Bannon – then executive chairman of the “alt-right” news network Breitbart – was Wylie’s boss. And Robert Mercer, the secretive US hedge-fund billionaire and Republican donor, was Cambridge Analytica’s investor. And the idea they bought into was to bring big data and social media to an established military methodology – “information operations” – then turn it on the US electorate.

    Ok, it’s later, lol.

Snow is gone except in shady areas, and it’s mostly gone there, too. Looking forward to some warm weather so I can start my garage project. Get that place whipped into the shape I’ve been working for since we built it in 1998.

I’m going with Pete and family to the March for Life in Lansing Saturday. I have to be at their house at 9:30 a.m. Ugh. Hope that works for me. I think I’ll skip my blood pressure pill because it has a diuretic in it.

Cambridge Analytica: the crap to do with this country and our nightmarish Trump election is being brought to light so fast now, my head is spinning. The election stunk by all accounts, an evil man is now scaring the U.S. and the world with his superlative ignorance and moral turpitude. We can only start at the White House and wonder why he isn’t stopped, why our voting systems aren’t being secured. Why Trump’s whims are indulged. Look how fast the CEO of Cambridge Analytica was dismissed. Where Trump the Ignorant is concerned, he’s the one who is untouchable. He could destroy the earth, just like that, that fool in a suit that needs to be a straight jacket. *sigh*

    I’m plum wore out.

This Michigan community is one of the best places to live in the United States

I’ve mentioned the name of this city many times here on DWF. Usually when I’m going to the Meridian Mall, or Best Buy, or to Maru for sushi. Okemos is also where the rehab place is that Bob was in last year. Okemos is about a 25 minute drive from here on all 55 mph country roads.

You, like the rest of us with IQ’s above 60 are struggling with the insanity that has taken over. Don’t worry, there is no hope, we are all goners, doomed.

    • °¿º Carol says:

That’s the way it looks. Trump has accelerated, doing bad things faster and faster. My head is spinning with everything, I’m going to have to turn the news off, quit paying attention. It’s all so upsetting. No one will stop Trump, no matter WHAT he does. A madman can do anything he wants and the rest of us can only stare, helpless.

Foo. More drizzle and I am insufficiently motivated to go walking in it.

  7. °¿º Carol says:

Now we’ll really start to sweat it. McMaster gone, John Bolton in. Trump has picked off most of the sane people around him and will only have sycophants advising him. Not that I think anyone can make that man do anything. He’s in charge of everything. He’s Secretary of Everything. He’s judge, jury and executioner or is trying to set himself up to be all that. Heck, he should try to dismiss Congress, send them all home. He doesn’t need them, not King Trump.

Protests shut down I-5 in Sacramento because of the cops shooting an unarmed man 20 times, people are pissed and rightfully so, thugs.

    • °¿º Carol says:

Why do cops automatically believe a 911 call is 100% accurate. Why do cops believe whatever someone reports without checking things out WITHOUT SHOOTING FIRST? What in the hell is the matter with cops today? What’s with all the cruelty?

  9. jimhitchcock says:

Ah, Victoria Toensing joins hubby Joseph DiGenova in Trump’s team of legal machinators. Maybe Micki or Doc can tell us about Sen. Brock Adams.

    Very stylish no?
