Arkady Babchenko

Arkady Babchenko, a prominent Russian journalist, author, and a longtime Putin detractor who fled Russia in February 2017, was fatally shot outside his apartment on Tuesday in Kiev, Ukraine. The wounded Babchenko was found by his wife and died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Kiev Police Chief Andrei Krishchenko told the press that “the first and most obvious” possible motive for the killing was Babchenko’s work that’s long been critical of the Russian president. Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, in comments posted to his Facebook page, also implied involvement by Putin’s government in Babchenko’s death.

Babchenko is one of at least a dozen Kremlin critics who’ve been murdered or died under mysterious circumstances over the past decade. A Moscow native, he first rose to prominence in Russia in the early aughts, following the publication of One Soldier’s War, a memoir about his time fighting with the Russian army in its war with Chechnya and an indictment of how Russia treats its own—the young men conscripted into its army, as well as the Chechens living on Russian land. The book led to work as a war correspondent for a number of Russian newspapers, reporting on the country’s involvement in one nearby conflict after another: the Second Chechen War, the 2008 invasion of Georgia, and 2010 ethnic clashes in Kyrgystan.

Update, May 30, 2018, 10:50 am: On Wednesday, Arkady Babchenko showed up alive at a news conference in Kiev, Ukraine, according to the Associated Press and other journalists in attendance.

The head of the Ukrainian Security Service told press that the agency faked Babchenko’s death to catch those who were allegedly trying to kill him. According to reporters in attendance, at the press conference Babchenko apologized to his wife and said that as a result of the operation, one person has been brought into custody.

GENEVA (Reuters) – China has overtaken the United States in healthy life expectancy at birth for the first time, according to World Health Organization data.

Chinese newborns can look forward to 68.7 years of healthy life ahead of them, compared with 68.5 years for American babies, the data – which relates to 2016 – showed.

American newborns can still expect to live longer overall – 78.5 years compared to China’s 76.4 – but the last 10 years of American lives are not expected to be healthy.

WHO is likely wrong for those parts of China with significant air pollution. At least the northeast, maybe south past Shanghai.

Here’s one interpretation of what’s going on with Trump’s pardon of D’Souza

Lisa Gilbert is vice president of legislative affairs and Craig Holman is government affairs lobbyist for Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division.

The group just released a statement: “Pardoning D’Souza Is Trump’s Blazing Signal to Associates to Stay Loyal Amid Mueller Investigation”: “President Donald Trump today announced that he would pardon Dinesh D’Souza, a conservative political pundit and filmmaker, who in 2014 confessed to campaign money laundering and was sentenced to five years’ probation and a $30,000 fine. D’Souza devised a scheme to launder $20,000 in illegal contributions to the 2012 U.S. Senate campaign of Republican candidate Wendy Long. D’Souza solicited two ‘straw donors’ each to make another $10,000 contribution to the candidate, which he reimbursed the following day.”

Gilbert said today: “Pardoning someone who breaks anti-corruptions laws is not a subtle message. The president is sending a blazing signal to his surrogates and associates that they will be rewarded if they stay loyal. The precedent is particularly frightening as the important Mueller investigation into obstruction of justice and collusion continues and seems likely to have ongoing indictments and charges of those in the president’s orbit.”

Holman said today: “If there was any lingering doubt left that Trump’s pledge to ‘drain the swamp’ in Washington was nothing more than campaign rhetoric, today’s pardon of a confessed campaign money launderer should bring those doubts to a close.

“D’Souza confessed in court that he deliberately violated our campaign finance laws and with full knowledge that it was illegal. Allegations that the prosecution of D’Souza was political were dismissed by the judge as, legally speaking, ‘all hat, no cattle.’

“By pardoning D’Souza, Trump is sending another clear signal that he’s AOK with flagrant corruption.”

Yeah, Trump did not do this out of the goodness of his black heart.

Also, ‘conservative pundit and filmmaker’ does not begin to describe what a piece of work D’Souza is.

So rich boy thinks that by pardoning a few losers already no one will notice him pardoning his cohorts when the time comes. How did this guy get so rich being stupid? I’m stupid I should be rich too, dumb-asses with private jets beat me to it. 😦

So the dead creature under my house continues to stink, all registers plugged for odors. I can’t get under the house, too tight for my old corpus. I am approaching this problem the natural way, let the bugs have at it and do their job. Unfortunately they work slow.
