Authoritarianism Wednesday With Noam

Turds of a Feather

Following the end of World War II, liberal democracy began to flourish in most countries in the Western world, and its institutions and values were aspired to by movements and individuals under authoritarian and oppressive regimes. However, with the rise of neoliberalism, both the institutions and the values of modern democracy came rapidly and continuously under attack in an effort to extend the profit-maximizing logic and practices of capitalism throughout all aspects of economic and social life.

Sketched out in broad outlines, this story explains the resurgence of authoritarian political trends in today’s Western societies, including the rise of far-right movements whose followers feel threatened by the processes unleashed by neoliberal economic policies. In the former communist countries and in the non-Western world, meanwhile, authoritarianism is also on the rise, partly as a residue of authoritarian legacies, and partly as a reaction to perceived threats posed to national culture and social order by global capitalism.

With each new revelation from Gates’ testimony, I can’t help but think about how elected officials from both legacy parties have continually protected the rich and powerful in numerous walks of life, but especially in banking and financial services.

Bank fraud, bogus financial documents to obtain bank loans, FDIC banks with deep, illegal relationships with scum like Manafort, et al (there’s a long list of names — including U.S. Senators, Dems included).

There are swamp creatures everywhere — now, we know a little more about how the swamp operates.

Looks like Cathy McMorris Rodgers is gonna have a tough general election campaign ahead!

Also, here in my neck of the woods, appears we are able to “retire” Doug Ericksen (R) as WA State Senator. He’s a slime-ball extraordinaire! *Fingers crossed!*

Today feels like the hottest one of the summer so far…but it isn’t. Maybe I’m just weary of it.

Temperatures are rising stunningly fast in geological time scales, but in terms of a human lifetime, the rate probably seems relatively slow in comparison to most people. Which means…complacency, apathy…and yes, denial…meanwhile, all we hear is Russia, Russia, Russia…and more crapola…while the transformation of the planet is probably the biggest, most important story of our time.
