Climate Change Just Ahead sign with bad day on background

There have been many climate warnings issued in the past few decades, but the latest one is more like an air-raid siren than an alarm clock with an overworked snooze button: In a just-released special report, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels “would require rapid, far-reaching, and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.”

In 2015, when the world’s nations reached the Paris Agreement to limit global average warming to “well below” 2 degrees Celsius, they also agreed to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees, because the smaller increase would significantly reduce the dangers of climate change. The world has already warmed by about 1 degree since pre-industrial times, and the impacts—such as extreme weather and rising sea levels—have turned out to be worse than predicted.

The new report not only assesses what a 1.5-degree-warmer world would look like and how it compares with a 2-degree world (goodbye, coral reefs), but also assesses what it would take to hold warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees. Written by 91 experts from 40 countries, it contains such bad news that the authors struggled with how to break it to the public. “Scientists might want to write in capital letters, ‘ACT NOW, IDIOTS,’ but they need to say that with facts and numbers,” Kaisa Kosonen of Greenpeace told the BBC News.

Category 6 Hurricanes coming to a neighborhood near….?

Meteorologists and scientists never imagined that there would be a need for a category 6 storm, with winds that exceed 200 miles per hour on a sustained basis, sweeping away everything in its path. Until now, such a storm wasn’t possible, so there was no need for a new category above category 5.

Right now, however, there is anywhere from 5 to 8% more water vapor circulating throughout the atmosphere than there was a generation ago. This, combined with warmer temperatures that are driving water up from the deep ocean in places where hurricanes typically form, has created the potential for superstorms that we haven’t seen before – and aren’t really prepared for.

Not a hot day, no sun, windows open, drizzle and humid as hell! Washed, dried my hair, hit the kitchen to make a Spaghetti Pie and my head was soaked by the time I was done.

It was drizzling on my walk, stayed on the patio until it let up, then walked down to the road to get my mail.

Pete coming over in the morning. Hope weather cooperates, Pete needs to disconnect the pool filter, take it over to the hose, take it apart and clean it out with the hose. Let her drip dry, then seal it back up and put it in my little barn for the winter.

THEN we’ll hang out in the LR unless we have to go to Lansing to get me a new basement freezer. I’m worried about my freezer today, doesn’t seem to be acting normal. I hung a thermometer inside, hope It’s just me.

The Spaghetti Pie is for Pete to take home to his family. Of course, he’ll have some while he’s here. He and his family love that recipe. He’ll be happy I made it for them.

So I chatted online with a rep from Sleep Number today about replacing the air pump.

Anne: What seems to be the problem with the pump?
Anne: I have not heard from you for a few moments. Are you still with me?
    Jim Hitchcock: Yes.
Jim Hitchcock: Pump needs replacing. Not warranty. True story, 2 mice made it their home briefly.
    Anne: Ohh man
Anne: I am sorry to hear that.

And later, after placing the order…

Anne: Are there any other questions I can answer for you today?
Jim Hitchcock: Thanks Anne! And in case anybody is wondering, the mice were evicted with extreme prejudice.
    Anne: I would believe that!
