The number of immigrant children in federal custody has reached an all-time high, with more than 14,000 children currently being held in government facilities, the San Francisco Chronicle first reported Friday. Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the children, confirmed the figures to both the Chronicle and The Hill.
The numbers are also likely to rise, as children are staying in the government facilities even longer. While many of the kids are waiting to be released to “sponsors,” or family members who will take them in, many potential sponsors have been discouraged by a new policy that allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement to run background checks on them. Dozens of immigrants have been arrested by ICE officials while attempting to come forward as sponsors.
Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) co-sponsored a bill earlier this week that would discourage this practice. “Unaccompanied children are being held in detention facilities or living in tent cities due in part to potential sponsors’ fear of retribution from ICE for coming forward,” Harris said. “This is an unacceptable obstacle to getting these children into a safe home, and we must fix it.”

I’ve been wondering about that 14,000 number, especially after they started reporting only 600 kids left, only 150 kids left…next time I’d see an article it would be like this one and have a HUGE number. I don’t trust any number they give, but if I had to pick a likely one, it was NEVER the lower numbers. I really didn’t trust THOSE numbers.

My Pete is ALWAYS having to do something for me these days. The other day I slid the back off the portable phone to see if I could change it’s battery, no way I could get that bugger back on! Pissed me off! I slid it over to Pete while he was talking to my insurance company on his cell phone and bim, bam, boom…it was back on. I cannot fathom why things like that are suddenly getting difficult. It doesn’t seem like it’s me, I’ve opened dozens of things of every variety and NEVER had trouble shutting them again. Weird.

Estimate to fix my car is $3,960.89. They vacuumed the glass out and wiped the inside down, I think, and put plastic over the window. We’ll take it back next week to get it fixed.
We then met Jill at Los Tres Amigos in Mason. One of the servers who has been there since they opened, he and his wife had another baby. I picked up a gift for them last week, in fact the day the deer hit me, I wrapped it this morning and we gave it to José. It’s what I usually get, I guess Jill does, too. One of ever baby food, some of the cereals, 3 bibs and a sleeper with snowmen on it. A practical gift, baby’s first foods.
After I brought it home, Jill asked about the expiration dates. CRAP! Coming from the generation that didn’t have expiration dates, I didn’t think of that, but they are all good. When my kids were born we started feeding them real food, cereal maybe at one month old, or so. Today, they tell you to wait until much later before giving them food. That’s why the dates had to be off in the future.
