Sunday Sunbeams

IT’S BACK! A BIG HOLE IN THE SUN’S ATMOSPHERE: During solar minimum, long-lasting holes open in the sun’s atmosphere, releasing streams of solar wind into space. One of those holes is turning to face Earth now, and it’s a big one:

We’ve seen this hole before. It opened in the summer of 2018 and has been spinning around as the sun rotates, lashing Earth with solar wind approximately once a month. The last time our planet felt its gaseous emissions, in late Jan. 2019, bright auroras surged around the Arctic Circle and some of the lights even spilled into the USA.

G1-class geomagnetic storms are likely on Feb. 26th or 27th when the solar wind returns. Stay tuned!

In the other direction, at well more than 120 times as far from Sol as Twrra, not only is there FarOut but even much further, FarFarOut.

As we used to say, “Far out!”

Den, I thought you said you turned a switch back to where we have to put in our email address. I still turned up as anonymous yesterday when I forgot to put in my email address. That wasn’t supposed to happen. I don’t want you tossing my posts because they say anonymous.

We got our huge windstorm and guess who lost power? Jill came over at 10:30 w/ the granddogs and it went out at 11:50. She went home around 1:30 and the power didn’t come back until 10:04 p.m. 10 hours later. No heat, can’t flush the toilet. At first I sat in the LR, reading, but when it got too dim for my deteriorating eyes, I wrapped a blanket around me and paced the house, standing in the bedroom window a lot to watch the birds at the feeders.

I got out my salad and ate it at 2:30, something that didn’t require being nuked, then laid on the couch in my parka w/ the hood around my head, under two blankets. I stayed there pretty much until the power came back except for getting up to look out windows, and to pee. I made sure to not drink anything, no water, and I STILL had to pee. I never once forgot and flushed the toilet.

House went down to 54°. When the furnace finally kicked in I set it to heat up to only 60°. After it rests for awhile, I jack it up a couple more degrees. I didn’t want to run the furnace constantly to get it all the way up to the usual 67°.

And that was my day. Pete coming over in the morning, good. The downloaded interface on this computer to do w/ my outdoor cameras, isn’t working. Naturally. He’ll have to figure out what’s wrong.
