Amazon, Walmart, Target Corp, Ikea AB and Bed Bath & Beyond Inc were accused of infringing four patents related to “filament” LED light bulbs, which use 90% less energy and last many years longer than traditional light bulbs.
These patents relate to what the university called the “reinvention of the light bulb” by researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara led by professor Shuji Nakamura, who won the 2014 Nobel prize for physics.
The university is seeking unspecified damages, including royalties, in lawsuits filed with the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, and wants the retailers to enter license agreements.
It has also asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to open a probe into the retailers’ conduct, saying the retailers have failed to require their suppliers to honor the university’s patents.
None of the retailers immediately responded to requests for comment.

Climatic injustice: who contributes most to climate change? The wealthy. Especially the uber wealthy, with their private jets, their profligacy in all its forms, their overuse of transportation, their exorbitant use of fossil fuels for their fleet of vehicles, their spacious homes with square footage close to shopping mall scale in some cases, their attitude that because they are rich, they won’t be affected by climate change. They’ll buy their way out of it — the rest of us, be damned. Humans with fewer resources are “toys” to them.
They’ll use their private jets to fly in young girls to abuse. Human trafficking is a moral outrage.
The rich contribute a great deal more to the climate crisis, than ordinary people around the world. They have done the calculation that there’s a likelihood they will survive it, and not pay the price for their actions.
Diversion? That horrible excuse for a “man” deserves to be incarcerated for the rest of his life. He is a blight. And so is every person who has protected him.
And, it doesn’t say much about “upstanding” scientists that they were willing to consider, and sometimes gladly accept, his money for alleged “research” because then…they could hobnob with the wealthy glitterati.
The system of the rich is they encourage those who can afford it, to consume more without placing any obstacles in their way. The rich are the ones who’ve created the DIVERSION — and many of us fell for it…they are the main culprits in the climate crisis.
