Thoughtless Thursday

From attacks on evolution to denunciations of the “ivory tower,” anti-intellectualism has a long and contemptible history in the United States. It is now killing Americans.

For months we have known about the global threat posed by the coronavirus. Yet, led by a president who consistently rejects empirical realities, the White House dithered. The cost of that dithering is now apparent, with the number of infections increasing exponentially, millions of people newly unemployed, and countless health care workers confronting a pandemic underequipped and overwhelmed.

This is not just a Donald Trump problem, however. To be sure, Trump is astoundingly ignorant and uniquely incompetent among modern U.S. presidents, and his mendacity and ineptitude will result in thousands of unnecessary deaths. But the problems afflicting us today point to a larger rot in American political life.

For decades the Republican Party has railed against expertise, painting it as a conspiratorial assault on so-called “conservative” values and the millions of Americans who embrace them. According to this reactionary worldview, experts, academic and otherwise, are not learned individuals seeking truths. They are, rather, left-wing subversives attempting to undermine the nation from within.

The downstream effects of this pandemic are horrendous…and more to come. Sigh.

PRH says other small, critical-access hospitals in the state have less than 30 days cash on hand and are in danger of closing. PRH says it currently has 64 days cash on hand, working on a goal to avoid falling below 30 days cash.

PRH is seeking sources of government funding through FEMA, the CAREs Act and Medicare Advance Payment, and has also started a COVID-19 Fund with its Foundation. PRH says a philanthropic effort has raised over $330,000 so far.

“The Foundation Board is working with the hospital to provide an additional $500,000 in unrestricted cash,” PRH said in a release. “Those wanting to donate online, can go to http://www.pullmanregional.org and click on Covid-19 Fund or contact the Foundation at (509) 332-2046.”

It appears the “Deep State” is of cheeto-faces creation. Using that phrase supposedly is meant to divert attention away from himself while he pulls all the levers necessary to implement Fascism.

That son-of-a-bitch needs to be behind bars for being a TRAITOR of the first degree!

Sunny. 20 pedestrians, 1 bicyclist and 5 busses. The C Street apartment building under construction has the street blocked yet again; I suppose that it is taking a long time to hook up the utilities.

I read this morning that SS folk will indeed get the stimulus and they don’t have to file fed. taxes. I expect they’ll dump it into my saving’s account. Well good, one less thing to whine about.

Trump’s cockroaches in the EPA are attacking science again? Will we ever be able to trust our government agencies again? I suppose yes, one he and his roaches are long gone.

Then the Navy fired a captain that tried to save the sailors on his boat. He didn’t want the virus to spread to the sailors who didn’t have it. So, being America, of COURSE they fired him.

On another note, Trump told everyone at his press conference rally that he has the most followers on FaceBook. Of course that isn’t true, but when had the truth stopped him from building himself up on a pile of lies. Barack Obama has more followers than he does, lol.

We have citizens dying, doctors and nurses getting sick and dying, we’re not even at the apex of the virus in this country yet and he stands there on TV, talking about his FaceBook followers. It is incredible how much I hate that man.

    What?!?!?! At worldometer site…

    NOTE ON FRANCE DATA:

On April 2, France reported 884 additional deaths that have occurred in nursing homes over the past days and weeks [source]. The French Government did not include these deaths in their official count, as their count only takes into consideration deaths of hospitalized patients. Following international standards of correct inclusion, our statistics will include these deaths, and will add them to the April 2, 2020 count following the attribution criteria of date of report.

If and when the French government determines and communicates the correct distribution of these additional deaths over time, we will adjust the historical data accordingly. A similar issue took place on February 12, when China reported an additional 13,332 new cases in a single day due to a change in how cases were diagnosed and reported in Hubei.
