Sunny Sunday

A GREEN FLASH OVER DRY LAND: Seaside photographers have a special fondness for the sunset. It’s the time of day for the green flash–a split-second pulse of verdant light that signals the disappearance of the sun beneath the ocean waves. But the sea is not always required. Yesterday in Treviso, Italy, Enrico Finotto was looking across dry land when he witnessed this magnificent green flash.

“It was a complete surprise,” says Finotto.

Atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley explains what happened: “This is a mock-mirage green flash produced by light rays bending as they cross a temperature inversion layer. Such flashes can happen over land as well as the sea. We see more flashes over the sea because the sea horizon is not obscured by hills or buildings. But land flashes can be just as spectacular.”

Moreover, dry land offers an advantage that the sea does not. “Over land you might also see a flash twice!” continues Cowley. “I saw once one from our garden, ran indoors and upstairs to see a repeat performance a few seconds later. Try this on a hill slope but be careful, it can be the stuff of heart attacks!”

Didn’t get over here yesterday, but I did finish my Christmas cards. Went down to the basement and it took me 45 minutes to fold them. Now I see I forgot to stock up on envelopes. Geez, Carol. I have to hit the mall up in Okemos this week for a couple last minute presents, there’s an Office Max there. I labeled and put a stamp on the cards that have to head out of state, will mail them tomorrow. Getting things to other states takes longer now than it did in the old days, before they tried to kill off the post office.

I shoveled us out once again yesterday but I didn’t finish the dog trail around the garage. It’s supposed to go down to zero tonight, I think, and another inch of snow expected. I should get my butt out there right now and finish the garage. I did, however, shovel my path out to the bonfire pict yesterday, it’s wider this time AND there was no wind around 4:30…SO I BURNED THE TRASH! There were 15 grocery sacks from the kitchen, two pizza boxes, several wild bird seed bags and a cherry pie box. The cardboard boxes I will collapse and put in the trunk to take to recycling along w/ my other recyclables. In a couple weeks, or whenever, in no hurry to make that trip. Probably ice and snow around the bins and I my shoes are worn out, don’t want to fall.

I better call the shoe place tomorrow, see if my shoes arrived and no one sent me an email about it.

Scanning the news in the Detroit Free Press today, looks like the electors in Michigan are all republicans. Well then, that’s that. No chance they will do the right thing tomorrow, they’re one of the enemy.

Another thing about our rigged voting system, even the stinkin’ electors are gerrymandered, or whatever. How is it they’re all republican? I didn’t want to wade thru the entire article to see if that was explained. Screw it. Why do I need to know, we’re all doomed anyway.

Funny that when I think of Michigan I think of the one time I visited there. I was about to turn 21 and about to lose my free flight privilege on TWA, who my Mom worked for, so I paid a visit to my best friend Steve, working ATC at Selfridge AFB (there’s a fun story about that trip I’ll tell someday).

We went to the U at Ann Arbor, I was amazed how young Michiganders were exactly like Californians. Hope that hasn’t changed.

I knew 2016 was going to suck when I went in the hospital for my Gall Bladder first thing in January.

Now I am in need of a brain enema. Yup a real lousy year with the strong possibility next year will be even worse, joy.
