Gen. John Kelly’s ramping up of deportation measures against undocumented residents of the US, in accordance with Donald Trump’s campaign promises, contains many hidden dangers.
The rational way to deal with long-term unauthorized immigrants would be to offer them a path to citizenship, not waste taxpayers’ money deporting 10.9 million people– the vast majority of whom do essential and backbreaking labor that the native-born eschew. Most people don’t realize that there is no way for someone brought up in the US without citizenship to apply for it. The US needs its immigrants if it is to remain a great power.
If the undocumented residents of the US who have not committed any other crime here become afraid that they will be arrested on sight, this fear will endanger the rest of us.
The undocumented will become less likely to seek drivers’ licenses and automobile insurance, which is a menace to other US residents. California, which has 3 million, convinced 800,000 undocumented residents to get drivers’ licences, a victory for public safety, which could now be undone.
Likewise, in California some 93% of the children of undocumented families are enrolled in school. Some proportion of these children were born in the US and we want them educated as future citizens. But will undocumented parents start avoiding all government facilities, including schools?
It is undesirable that this large population avoid getting vaccinations, or that battered women should fear to go to the authorities. Making law-abiding undocumented people go underground poses substantial health and other risks to the rest of us.
When you sneak into the USA, obtain a SS number illegally and spend 20 years here without learning to speak English, you should be deported.
One must apply for citizenship, go through the hoops, learn English and stop waving the Mexican flag and wave the American flag instead, #noquarterforcheaters.

I couldn’t care less about “illegal immigrants.” If they got a SS number, worked here for years, to me they’re just another American. Working and living each day, just like me and everyone else I know. So they lack that piece of paper.

Another gorgeous day, another high of 63°. I decided to try my tractor, and it started! So, I hooked up the cart and went out to pick up sticks. Did only about half the work, but it was a start.
Now I have that load in the bonfire pit, next chance I get, like after a rain or snow, and no wind, I’ll burn the trash that has been piling up in the garage. After that I’ll go get the rest of the stick and reload the bonfire pit.
Spring in the air, two Sandhill cranes flew over the cornfield behind us Monday. Today, grackles on the lawn by the pool and a red-winged black bird singing in the tree by the bird feeders.
Head that tomorrow will be another nice one but cold coming in Saturday and maybe snow. We’ve also been warned there might be a tornado tomorrow. Conditions are suitable.

Home from the piano concert. New faculty Lark Powers, accompanied in 2 pieces by her partner, Ricardo de la Torre, played 5 exquisitely executed works.
The most serious students were there; Alice, Keadrin with Kirill, pianist Gareth, maybe others I don’t know. Lots of faculty members there and we all sang Happy Birthday to Jeff Savage. Nice to here it on key and in harmony for a change.
