Non-Geriatric Thursday

An anti-aging startup hopes to elude the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and death at the same time.

The company, Elysium Health, says it will be turning chemicals that lengthen the lives of mice and worms in the laboratory into over-the-counter vitamin pills that people can take to combat aging.

The startup is being founded by Leonard Guarente, an MIT biologist who is 62 (“unfortunately,” he says) and who’s convinced that the process of aging can be slowed by tweaking the body’s metabolism (see “Is There a Fountain of Youth in Our DNA?”).

The problem, Guarente says, is that it’s nearly impossible to prove, in any reasonable time frame, that drugs that extend the lifespan of animals can do the same in people; such an experiment could take decades. That’s why Guarente says he decided to take the unconventional route of packaging cutting-edge lab research as so-called nutraceuticals, which don’t require clinical trials or approval by the FDA.

This means there’s no guarantee that Elysium’s first product, a blue pill called Basis that is going on sale this week, will actually keep you young. The product contains a chemical precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD, a compound that cells use to carry out metabolic reactions like releasing energy from glucose. The compound is believed cause some effects similar to a diet that is severely short on calories—a proven way to make a mouse live longer.

The picture of all the hummingbird feeders, is that at the place you live? Are they YOUR feeders, Den?

You almost need that many feeders with hummingbirds. They run each other off constantly, it’s like only one can feed at a feeder at a time even if there are 6 holes. They eat and fight, eat and fight.

A couple years ago we actually saw 5 hummers eating at the same feeder, at the same time. It was a miracle. Haven’t seen such a thing since.

Just went back to look when you said it was a gif. When I saw it earlier, it wasn’t gif-fing, now it is. I wouldn’t have asked you if that was in your neighborhood if I saw it moving the first time.

We have a new toilet, bought an American Standard, the tall kind, round. Pete told us to get an oval, nope. Didn’t want it jutting out in the john, taking up valuable space. We got the one that claims it can flush 16 golf balls. Told Pete to get THAT kind, it flushes fast, like a dream. LOVE it.

So what did he do when they moved into their new place, bought a Kohler oval. Flushes pathetically like most toilets, water goes round and round AND I HATE that oval. Damn, it makes it hard to…wipe, know what I mean? Sooo happy we got the normal round one.

You need to post picts of your home improvements, Den. Like the lattice thing.

Toilets like that have the built in ‘turd parade lap feature’. However I know of no Kohlers being manufactured today that do that, most are the low water use kind that evacuate the bowl in a hurry at least here in CA anyway. Mr Wiggly doesn’t like round bowls, ew!
